Years ago, we came to you for tenderness and comfort;
You lovingly tended to our bumps and scrapes;
To our cuts and bruises;
You were able to soothe our pain with a bandage and a kiss,
And soon we were off and running;
Looking for the next "emergency" ...
Only to be healed by you again.
And as time passed, you listened compassionately when you were
Called upon to mend our young broken hearts and wounded egos;
You comforted us with a kind word,
And an ever-present shoulder to lean on ...
As always, we knew you were there for us.
But somewhere in time ... life changed and became more complicated.
With our increasing years, came increasing problems;
Each one became more difficult for you to lovingly mend ...
Our cuts and bruises turned to surgery and complications
That mere bandages and a kiss could not heal;
Our broken hearts turned to shattered dreams and disillusionment,
Where kind words and a shoulder weighed heavily under their burden;
And yet ... as always, you were there.
We tend to see you as all knowing ... all encompassing ... all healing;
Ever the one to cure our ills and unravel our problems ...
And yet, as time has passed, your advice and care brought
New visions, new lessons and new meaning to our lives.
For sometimes, there are problems too great for you to mend;
Issues we must struggle through on our own;
Reasons to find our own inner strength and hidden faith.
For although we know your shoulder is still there to lean on ...
Your advice, your comfort and care are ever-present ...
It is ultimately ourselves who must conquer our fears,
Our difficulties and our problems.
Do not feel heart-broken when you cannot continue to rescue us ...
For we must learn to rescue ourselves.
Just knowing you are still there for a kind word, a loving gesture,
And a consoling ear ... is enough.
We sometimes forget that you were once as vulnerable as we are;
Only through time and life experience did you become
The two wonderful people we admire today.
So fear not ... For it is only through our own weaknesses
That we shall find our true strength;
And with experience, wisdom and time,
We will learn to recognize these things as you do.
For it is now that our children, our nephews, our niece are
Looking to us for strength and guidance ...
And with God's faith, and the knowledge that we are not alone ...
We shall find that strength to overcome all ... and carry on.
