To a Dear Friend
A wonderful friend; a true one indeed;
If ever the phrase is mentioned,
"A man's best friend",
My dear sweet companion, you will be there in my thoughts.
When I first saw you …
A bundle of fur;
Eyes sparking with love and happiness;
I knew you were to be my friend.
One I could talk to when others would not listen;
One I could share my heart with,
And somehow I knew you would understand.
You arrived as a bundle of joy,
Just like a human child.
Your love was felt by everyone;
It touched everyone.
Like a miracle, you held my life together;
With your warmth, with your loyalty,
With your attention,
And your undying devotion.
And now, though your body may be failing,
The love I feel for you will never die.
It will stay with me forever as a cherished memory
Of one who gave so much, yet asked so little.
Your life has been a rich one,
And those of us who know you, will miss you:
But the suffering must end;
And because yours was an unselfish love,
Ours must be also.
